Miishe African Dance Class with Nii Kwartey Owoo at Yorkshire Dance, Leeds
Tuesday 8 October - Tuesday 10 December 2019 (Studio 1: 6.00-7.30pm)
*no class on Tuesday 29 October
Miishe African Dance is a weekly class held at Yorkshire Dance in Leeds, on Tuesdays 6.00-7.30pm. The class explores various West African dances including traditional variations and routines. Classes begin with modern African freestyle street dance to get you moving to reggae and afrobeat rhythms, followed by focused tuition in traditional West African dance movements.
Every week Nii teaches traditional West African dance techniques along with the timing used in traditional dance and drumming. For those that attend regularly, you will learn a series of traditional variations to make up a full routine. Some classes will include live African drumming and you will experience the strong relationship found between traditional West African music and dance.
The classes are mixed ability and no previous experience is required. New movements are taught each week that you can pick up easily, but it is more beneficial to your development if you attend consecutively. Nii can stretch and challenge more experienced dancers with extended or more complex variations and movements.
Nii’s dance classes include some cultural and historical background to the dances and their relevance today in West African society.
